Limestone, like all carbonate rocks, has a whitish color that often makes it easy to recognize in the field. However, the original sediment can sometimes contain significant amounts of other minerals, such as clays, which usually darken the rock.
Marl limestone contains clay, which makes it darker and less compact than pure limestone. It was already used by the Romans as a construction material and to produce lime.
