Gneiss

Various developmental stages of the genus Lecidea are visible in the image. The black reproductive structures and the areolate thallus are clearly noticeable. It is likely Lecidea lithophila, a pioneer species typically found on acidic, iron-rich rocky substrates in alpine and subalpine areas. It appears especially red when the substrate is rich in iron.
On this fragment of Alpine gneiss grows Lecidea lithophila, a pioneer lichen that colonizes iron-rich rock surfaces. Its black structures and reddish thallus tell the geological story of high-altitude environments.
