Milky quartz vein

The crystalline rock (light gray banded gneiss) is almost entirely covered by lichens such as Rhizocarpon geographicum (light green) and Umbilicaria sp. (gray). It contains a vein of milky quartz, which seems to provide a less favorable substrate for the growth of these specific organisms.
Milky quartz is found in Siberia, Brazil, the European Alps, Madagascar, the United States, and Namibia. Quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust (about 12% of its volume), after feldspars.
