Mafic enclaves

On this granitic surface, the dark inclusions appear like elongated shadows within a mineral light. These are mafic enclaves — fragments of denser, iron-rich magma trapped within the lighter, silica-rich granite during its slow cooling deep underground. Their irregular, diffuse shapes tell the story of a chaotic dance between two molten materials — the light and the dark, the buoyant and the heavy — frozen in the instant the rock solidified.
Gana Negra lies within one of the oldest zones of the Adula massif, where the crystalline basement reveals outcrops of gneisses and intrusive granites. These rocks formed at great depths, under intense heat and pressure, during the most dramatic phases of the Alpine orogeny. Here, acidic and basic magmas partially mingled, creating hybrid textures and intrusive structures still visible today. It is a landscape that speaks of the dialogue between the forces of the mantle and the crust — between order and chaos at the birth of the Alps.
