Hornblende schist

Resembling elongated fragments of coal, hornblende prisms are an integral part of this metamorphic rock. Their presence indicates that the rock underwent high temperature and pressure during the formation of the Alpine mountain chain.
Hornblende is a dark mineral rich in iron and magnesium. Its presence in schist reveals extreme temperature and pressure conditions during Alpine metamorphism.
