Dolomite

Dolomite is a very massive rock with a characteristic white color, formed in a tropical marine environment. With the rise of the Alpine chain, the sediment was transformed into hard rock and pushed to high altitudes. It now serves as a substrate for numerous lichen species, such as Xanthoria sp., known for its vivid orange color.
Dolomite is a sedimentary carbonate rock composed mainly of the mineral dolomite, a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium. It was named after the French naturalist and geologist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750–1801), who studied it in the Dolomite mountain ranges.
