Clay schist

A light vein of calcite cuts through the dark rock composed of clay minerals. This color contrast reflects very different formation processes: the slow accumulation of marine clay that later solidified, and the filling of a fracture in the rock by calcite.
Schists are metamorphic rocks that form deep in the Earth’s crust under high pressure and temperature. They result from the transformation of preexisting rocks and emerge at the surface through tectonic uplift, erosion, and large-scale geological processes.
