A crustose lichen with a white thallus covers much of the surface of this outcrop. The anthracite-gray clayey schists are barely visible. The rock is so heavily weathered that the original layering of the sediment is no longer distinguishable.
Fine sediments such as clays and silts typically settle in very slow-moving waters, like lakes, lagoons, river deltas, floodplains, and offshore sandy areas. In these environments, the rocks that later undergo metamorphism to become schists are often formed.
