Clay schist

The dark rock, composed of clay minerals metamorphosed during the formation of the Alpine chain, is partially covered by the lichen Xanthoria elegans, which adds a splash of orange color to an otherwise black-and-white background.
Clay schists are metamorphic rocks that derive from the transformation of fine sediments under pressure during tectonic events such as the rise of the Alps. Today they emerge at the surface, although their origin is not linked to calm water deposition.
