Quartz and feldpars

The irregular alternation of coarse light and dark bands reflects the varying mineralogical composition of this metamorphic rock. Quartz and feldspars, ranging from light gray to milky white, are interspersed with dark biotite.
Gneiss forms at great depths under high pressure. Its alternating bands tell a long geological story of heat, pressure, and mineral transformation.
