Clayey shale

The dark gray layers of clay shale now appear in vertical position, but they were originally deposited on a flat seafloor. Enormous forces and immense time scales (tens of millions of years) turned ancient mud into solid rock and lifted it to 2,000 meters altitude.
Fine sediments are typically deposited in slow-moving waters such as lakes, lagoons, deltas, and marine basins. In such low-energy environments, thin layers accumulate, which over time can turn into sedimentary rocks.
